During legal strike action, active members will not accrue pensionable service during the work stoppage. This will result in a gap in your pensionable service as neither employer nor employee contributions will be made during the stoppage.
You will be eligible to buyback this pensionable service when you return to regular work. See the below FAQ for more information on this process.
FAQ
Can I buy back pensionable service for time lost due to a strike?
Yes, strike action is a valid reason to purchase pensionable service. Visit “Purchasing Pensionable Service” for a full list of the available periods of pensionable service you can purchase.
How do I purchase pensionable service for lost time due to a strike?
Once you return to regular work, you can initiate the purchase of pensionable service through My Pension Resource.
Go to “My Pension > Purchase Pensionable Service” to choose the pensionable service period you want to purchase. Make sure to set your Communication Preferences (under Profile) to receive your quote, and other communication from the WISE Trust Pension Contact Centre, electronically via the Message Centre to avoid any delays.
You can only initiate the purchase of pensionable service following your return to work.
How much will it cost?
If you elect to purchase the pensionable service period within six months after returning to regular work, the cost will be equal to the amount you would have contributed to the Plan if the strike had not taken place. In that case, your employer would make the employer’s contributions for the period of the absence.
If you elect to purchase the pensionable service more than six months after returning to work, the cost will be calculated by the Plan actuary and will likely be higher.
*Please note due to the mass impact of this strike, there may be a delay in processing related purchases of pensionable service. More information on this will be provided to Active Members as it becomes available.
